A quote I ran across....

"Government, in its very essence, is opposed to all increase in knowledge. Its tendency is always towards permanence and against change...The progress of humanity, far from being the result of government, has been made entirely without its aid and in the face of its constant and bitter opposition." -- H.L. Mencken

I would have to say that for the most part I agree with this. Some parallels could be drawn with religion as well, but that goes without saying...

Also, I have to say that there might be some areas where government has aided the people... at least in some incarnation. Such things as organization of work forces etc... a military force to protect the people... government in some forms is simply a matter of civil organization. People trading some of their income or freedom for safety in numbers and a shared work load etc.

It's great to see quotes like this... but you should always stop and think about it... critical thinking... without which we are easily led around like sheep.
